As part of the Human Rights Week, on 9 December 2020, the Trans, Non-Binary, and Intersex (TNBI) Caucus had a meeting. The meeting’s focus was to understand TNBI people’s experiences during the pandemic and learn about responses TNBI organisations organised. Moreover, the meeting aimed to understand the specific expectations that the community has from ERA and how can we shape our programs to meet those. The TNBI Caucus meetings provide a safe space for sharing since those are open only to people who share TNBI identities or experiences no matter their role in ERA’s member organisation. Thus, from that position of trust and safety, a fruitful debate was open during the meeting, resulting in a list of recommendations to be undertaken by ERA’s office.
The recommendations included ERA to organise regular caucus meetings, provide channels of communication between TNBI organisations and the regional and international decision-makers and diplomats, fundraise for regional programmes focused on advancing access to rights and services TNBI people in the Western Balkans and Turkey.
The meeting concluded that it is imperative for ERA to understand the impact that Covid-19 pandemic has on the trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming and intersex people from Western Balkans and Turkey and to provide a plan of action to reduce the effect it has.
TNBI Caucus is a platform that welcomes everyone with trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming and/or intersex identities and experience, no matter the role in the member organisation or the group. All interested in joining the caucus should reach out to Biljana Ginova at [email protected].
